Pataua is somewhere we have frequented a lot over the past 7yrs, and has something individual about it, compared to the rest of that coast line. Its striking beauty at full tide creates another world inside the inlet that compliments the contrasting mood of the surf beach on the outside. Mothers with babies settle under umbrellas of pohutukawas, while toddlers dig holes at the shore line. An elderly couple float by at speed, toes poking out of the water and eyes filled with the joy of a 6 year old - they’re one of the many passengers on the current train that takes you to the open sea. Groms and their dads jossle for position out on the surf beach. all watched over by Treasure Island.
The painting itself took almost 6months to complete - very draining to work on during that final lockdown in Auckland. It required every bit of me, and in the back of my mind I felt like this would be the last piece for a long time.
