Astronaut beekeepers, surreal in their context, dreamy weeds rise up around them, rolling hills morph into the river, and candy floss clouds wrap into the landscape.
In recent years Thomas Hart Benton has become one of my strongest sources of inspiration after seeing his murals filing a whole room at the Met in New York. His cartoony style is the perfect fit to my internal library of inspiration. Bentons work ‘The Kentuckian’ was a huge inspiration for this project.
This painting was designed specifically for the client, one of the beekeepers, who commissioned it. We had a lot of fun, and I learnt so much about bees. I’m really happy with the final piece.
